On Saturday May 16th, the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25 teamed up with the Herkimer Elks Lodge 1439 and the Mohawk Fire Department to sponsor a Bicycle Safety Rodeo.  In the parking lot of the American Legion participants got the chance to ride through an obstacle safety course.

There were 4 age groups (5 & under, 6-8, 9-11, and 12-14) for the safety obstacle course.  The fastest child in each age group to make it through the safety course won a new bike.  The youngest girl and youngest boy participants also received a free bike.  Throughout the day there were random drawings for bikes and bicycle helmets.

Event organizer Bernie Sommers said, “We had help from a lot of sponsors.”  He explained that besides bike and helmet inspections of all participants each entrant also received a goodie bag including candy, movie passes from Valley Cinema, and more.There were hotdogs were provided by Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25, ice cream from Stewarts, and orange drink from McDonalds.

Event organizer Bernie Sommers said, “This is an annual event to kick off summer, get kids out, and remind them about bike safety.”
