HERKIMER – A Utica woman is dead and an Ilion woman faces a traffic charge following a hit-and-run accident on Route 5 Wednesday night, state police said.
Just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, emergency responders received a call that a woman had been struck by a vehicle in the westbound lane of the two-lane highway just west of Route 51, and was receiving CPR from another pedestrian. The vehicle, a tan-colored Subaru, reportedly did not stop.
The victim was later identified as 22-year-old Kaitlyn McCloskey, of Utica. Emergency responders transported McCloskey to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where she later died.
On Thursday, following an investigation, police identified the driver of the vehicle that hit McCloskey as Shararhonda Hall, 31, of Ilion.
When questioned by police, Hall told officers she was aware she hit something but did not know it was a person. She told officers that she had immediately turned back following the accident and did not see the victim laying on the shoulder of the road. According to police, Hall then went home and called 911 to report the incident.
Police charged Hall with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree, an unclassified misdemeanor.
State police and MOVAC responded to the scene of the accident Wednesday night.
