ILION – Five people were displaced by a small house fire on Otsego Street in Ilion Wednesday evening, said Ilion Fire Chief Bob Paddock.
Firefighters received a call via Herkimer County dispatch just after 5 p.m., Feb. 7, and found visible smoke upon arriving at 175 Otsego Street, Paddock said. They were able to get the small basement fire under control within minutes.
Despite a snow storm that closed area schools during the day, Paddock said firefighters did not run into trouble from the roughly 6 inches of snow that fell Wednesday.
“The streets were in good shape and of course it’s a pretty straight shot from the station up Otsego Street,” he said. “The snow didn’t impact us at all.”
All five occupants of the home escaped without injury but one firefighter did sustain minor injuries, Paddock said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The residents have temporarily been displaced from the house, which is currently without electricity and heat. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross, Paddock said.
Herkimer Fire Department also responded to the scene to provide support.
