Four rescued after Canal accident

HERKIMER – Four people are reportedly alright following a boating accident on the Canal Saturday afternoon, said Herkimer Fire Lieutenant Ted Hilts.

At about 1:30 p.m., Herkimer Emergency personnel received a call that four boaters were stranded after their boat went over the dam near the NYS Thruway exchange on Mohawk Street, Hilts said.

According to MOVAC EMT Steve Martin, the four boaters had been fishing on the canal when their boat’s motor stopped working. The craft drifted toward the dam and fell over. All four were able to make it to shore on the island that divides the Canal from the Mohawk River at that point.

Others who were fishing in the area and witnessed the accident called 911, Martin said.

Herkimer Fire, Herkimer Police, MOVAC and State Police officials responded to the scene. Firefighters deployed a boat and ferried the four to safety, Hilts said. Two boaters were transported to a local hospital for evaluation but are said to be fine now, Hilts said.
