Moose River’s Kim Fiato, an Air Force Veteran, said, “A lot of our regulars are veterans. One group, Vets United comes once a month on Saturdays. This event was a great opportunity to build awareness of programs available for veterans.” She added, “We’re raffling off a basket of goodies and a Moose River T-shirt.”
Moose River offered hotdogs, chips, and a drink for veterans and the community while CGB’s Music Service (a veteran owned business) DJ’d tunes. Of course, there was also Moose River’s top-notch coffee too. Business neighbor, Route 51 Beer Belly Bob’s Discount Beverage Center got in on the fun too as they offered a beer tasting.
Viet Nam veteran, Don Wedemeyer took a moment from enjoying the picnic and said, “This is fantastic! Great idea.”
Danyel Sommer-Everson, who helped promote the event, said, “We have great representation from the Legion posts and VFW and we’re seeing more and more younger guys. It’s great to see fresh faces. We’re using Freedom Friday as a kick off running up to the Veterans Appreciation Picnic in September. Events like this allow us to keep awareness of veterans at the forefront. We can’t let them fall through the cracks. We plan on doing this once a year.”
