ILION – An accident on West Main Street in Ilion sent two Ilion Department of Public Works employees to the hospital Thursday afternoon, police said.
Around 2:30 p.m., a DPW crew was patching the road just to the west of the Main Street and Barringer Road intersection. A car approaching from the east ignored the flagman and apparently did not brake at all before slamming into a roller being driven by a DPW employee, police said. The impact pushed the roller forward, into and partially underneath the back of a small dump truck, also in use by the DPW. The operator of the roller was ejected to the side, saving him from being crushed under the dump truck, police said.
The roller operator and another DPW employee were both transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital, police said. The driver of the oncoming car was not injured. Several tickets have been issued.
No names were released yet.
