ILION – An Ilion man is in custody after fleeing police and causing a head-on collision on West Clark Street Tuesday evening, Ilion police said.
Ilion police, who had a felony arrest warrant for Eric L. Henderson, 34, of West Street, Ilion, located Henderson, with the assistance of New York State Police, at about 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Ilion McDonald’s. Henderson was wanted on four counts of rape in the third degree and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
As police attempted to arrest Henderson, who was seated in the driver seat of a motor vehicle, Henderson fled, intentionally backing into a marked police vehicle, narrowly missing striking two uniformed police officers, and speeding out of the parking lot, heading west on East Clark Street, police said.
Henderson continued onto West Clark Street, where he collided head-on with an oncoming and otherwise uninvolved vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was taken to Upstate University Hospital for his injuries. A passenger in Henderson’s vehicle was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center with minor injuries.
Henderson then got out of the vehicle to continue fleeing on foot. After a short foot-chase, Ilion police apprehended Henderson with the help of state police and a State Police K-9 unit.
While officers were in the process of taking Henderson, who continued to actively resist, into custody, another man, identified as Chandler Z. Seelbach, 24, of St. Johnsville, approached the scene on foot and attempted to obstruct and interfere with Henderson’s arrest, police said. Police subsequently arrested Seelbach as well.
Police charged Seelbach with obstructing governmental administration in the second degree and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in the village of Herkimer and remanded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond.
Henderson faces multiple charges in addition to the original charges of rape and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.
Henderson was also treated for minor injuries sustained during his flight and is in police custody.
