The second annual Little Falls Cheese Festival will be happening on Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 10 am – 5 pm on East Main Street in Little Falls. The Little Falls Cheese Festival is a fun event celebrating Little Falls as former cheesemaking capital with local cheese vendors and so much more.
Little Falls was once the cheese capital of the USA. The price of cheese in Little Falls influenced the price of cheese as far away as Europe. Today a wide range of high quality artisanal and farmstead cheeses are produced in the Mohawk Valley. The Little Falls Cheese Festival invites you to come and join us in celebrating the legacy of cheese making in Central New York, and the delicious and varied cheeses being produced today.
2015 exceeded all expectations for the first time festival. “Last year we gave them sold out signs with their vendor packs most vendors thought we were crazy but the signs went up around 230 last year” said Tom Laurenson, who has been instrumental in the festival’s planning. Laurenson explained that last year the event was held on West Main Street. This year’s version will be bigger and will be on East Main Street which can be entirely closed to traffic.
Little Falls was once the cheese capital of the nation. Cheese prices were set in Little Falls. Fortunately for the region, cheese making is making a comeback in the area. There is a number of quality, artisan cheese makers in the area. 2016 sees the festival expand with more cheese makers; 26 this year! They have also added more vendors in general, selling cheese related wares, bread, gourmet food, honey, cheese boards, and more. Laurenson said, “The goal to make this the premier cheese festival in New York State.”
An original play called, “Where’s the big cheese?” is debuting at the festival. The detective story is set in Little Falls. There will also be music all day from Clean Street and the Dharma Bums string band. A rolling slideshow about on life on the farm and cheese making will also be available.
