UPDATED 7:03 p.m. with identity of deceased, circumstances of her discovery and autopsy results
HERKIMER – A Herkimer man has been charged with concealing a human corpse after police discovered a body inside
his residence Wednesday, Herkimer police said.
Richard Howard, 58, faced arraignment on the charge today, and was remanded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail.
On Wednesday afternoon, at about 1 p.m., police responded to 526 W. Lake St., Herkimer, for a request that they check on the welfare of Richard and Lorraine Howard, as neighbors reported not having seen the couple in a number of days. Inside the house, they located Richard Howard and the body of Lorraine Howard, 53.
Officers transported Richard Howard to the police station and, with the assistance of the District Attorney’s office, obtained a search warrant for the West Lake Street residence.
An autopsy performed at Albany Medical Center Thursday morning showed that Lorraine Howard died of cardiac arrhythmia, thus making her death appear to have been from natural causes, police said. A toxicology report is still pending.
It appears Howard died some time between January 28 and February 21, though officials have not determined the exact time yet. Richard Howard failed to notify emergency medical services or law enforcement following her death, leading to the charge of concealing a human corpse, police said.
