Man charged with stealing donation canister

ILION – The man police believe is responsible for stealing a Pop Warner donation canister last week has been identified and sent to jail, police said Saturday evening.

On Sept. 1, officers arrested Nicholas McDonald, 20, of Ilion, and charged him with two counts of petit larceny. McDonald allegedly stole both a Pop Warner canister and another donation canister from Greenie’s Market on West Main Street, Aug. 28. Those canisters each held an undisclosed amount of money in them.

The investigation is ongoing as there was a third donation canister taken, belonging to an unknown organization, police said. Officers are working to identify that organization. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ilion police at 315-894-9911.

Following his Friday arrest, McDonald was arraigned in Ilion village court and remanded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.
