Man dead of apparent drowning at Lock 19 in Schuyler

SCHUYLER – A Utica man apparently drowned in the Erie Canal near Lock 19 in Schuyler Wednesday night, as he attempted to assist another struggling swimmer, said New York State Police.

Troopers responded to a call reporting two people in the water at the lock around 8 p.m. The investigation revealed that a woman had jumped into the water to save a dog. As that woman struggled to swim, her cousin’s boyfriend, George L. Grullon, 26, of Utica, entered the canal to assist her. The woman made it out of the water, but Grullon went under water and did not resurface, police said.

At about 11:15 p.m., the State Police Underwater Recovery Team located Grullon’s body in about 6 feet of water, about 10 feet from where he was last seen. The dog was located and pulled to safety by state police.

Herkimer County Coroner Vincent A. Enea, District 3, attended the scene. Enea said Grullon is scheduled for an autopsy at Albany Medical Center Friday.

The investigation is continuing.
