HERKIMER – While many mothers were at home or at a restaurant for another Mother’s Day, Erie Canal Cruises, a boat touring company in Herkimer, gave others the chance to enjoy the views of the Erie Canal.
Mothers and family members boarded the Lil’ Diamond III tour boat at 10:30 a.m. next to Gems Along the Mohawk, for a tour and generous brunch provided by the Waterfront Grille.
Passengers had the chance to see the forest-lined scenery of Herkimer County and ride through Lock 18, a 100-year-old water-lock.
This is the fourth straight year that Erie Canal Cruises has hosted this event. The Mother’s Day Brunch and Cruise first started after the construction of the Lil Diamond III tour boat in 2012.
Morrisville resident and mother Patrica Miller has been on this tour twice. She said that this cruise is the best and most unique gift for any mother.
“It’s cool,” she said. “It’s nice and there’s a lot of food. It’s nice to get away on a boat and not do anything. It’s our day. It only happens once a year.”
Jacqueline White General Manager of Erie Canal Cruises said that the Mother’s Day Cruise is a perfect start for the touring season.
“Mother’s Day is the perfect way to kick off the reopening of the Canal and our season,” White said. “Our season runs May 16 through October 18 this year.”
White also said that the Mother’s Day Brunch and Cruise is well thought-out idea for the tour company.
“It is something different for this area,” White said. “You and your mother can learn a little about our American and local history while spending precious time with each other on a special day.”
