On March 28, 2015 the First United Methodist Church in Herkimer, New York hosted a quilt and craft show. The exhibit was a fund raiser for the church’s general fund and for the church’s general mission. There were approx 25 vendors and 40-50 quilters from the Piecemakers Quilt Guild.
Rev. Janet Gleason explained that the event wouldn’t have happened without the volunteers from the congregation who helped with set up, clean up, and lunch. Since 1793 the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer has celebrated with “Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Doors.” The First United Methodist Church of Herkimer strives to meet the spiritual needs of an ever-changing community.
The Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Ilion organized the quilt show portion of the event. Their group meets the second Monday of the month (September – June) at the United Methodist Church in Frankfort at 6. pm.
Penny Watkins, who displayed a large purple quilt, explained that the Home Bbureau group she belonged to turned her onto quilting about 5 years ago. She has learned a lot. “The Piecemakers Quilting Guild of Ilion has taught us so much.” She said. Penny is happy to be part of handing down a tradition that combines art plus utility.
