Vets United held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the Herkimer VFW Post 4915. Vets United is a monthly meeting and social gathering for any foreign war veterans. Vets United is open to any veteran; you do not have to be a member of Post 4915.
Hosted by VFW Post 4915’s Ladies Auxiliary Vets United began last November with once a month meetings. Camaraderie and socialization are tools that help veterans of any age cope with PTSD, depression, and everyday life. The burgeoning Vets United group has 9 or 10 participants. They need more veterans. Danyel Sommer-Everson explained that they are mixing it up; veterans of all ages are welcome. She said, “When they get together the vets can be big talkers.”
John Senko a Korean War veteran, Don Wedemeyer a Vietnam veteran, Don Winslow an Air Force veteran and others gathered and talked over sandwiches, chips, salads, coffee, soda and refreshments. MRE’s (meals ready to eat) were a big topic of conversation.
“Everybody knows a veteran. Let’s support them,” said Ladies Auxiliary member Renee Bayer.
The Ladies Auxiliary is endeavoring to grow this new group. If you know a veteran that could benefit from companionship with other veterans point them in the direction of Vets United. The Ladies Auxiliary is also looking for donations and support. Contact VFW Post 4915 for more information.
The next Vets United meeting will be held May 12, 2015 at 5:30 pm at VFW Post 4915 on Mohawk Street in Herkimer.
