ILION – Students, scouts and community members took advantage of milder temperatures and sunny skies Saturday, to do some spring cleaning at the Ilion Marina as part of the NYS Canal Corporation’s annual Clean Sweep initiative.
“The Canal Corp does this every year but this is the first year we’ve jumped onboard,” said Village Trustee Bridget McKinley. “We’ve got Honor Society students, Boy Scouts (Troop 8), marina staff,
some of us from the village – Close to 30 volunteers. So, yea, I’m excited.”
The volunteers picked up fallen branches and raked leaves and twigs, swept sidewalks, picked up refuse and cleaned out flower beds.
“It gives the staff here a little jumpstart,” McKinley said. “They have so much to do with only Doc Master Sterling and two staff members.”
The clean-up efforts coincided with Earth Day, observed April 22.
