“In this time of high inflation, uncertain sales tax revenues, and need to find and keep a qualified and competent staff, the Herkimer County Legislature is pleased to announce that the budget we passed this evening has a flat tax levy and a decrease of 8.28% in the overall tax rate to $4.32 per thousand,” announced Patrick E. Russell, Chairman of the Herkimer County Ways and Means Committee.

He added, “This is a structurally sound budget that does not cut any programs or staff and prepares the County for uncertain economic times going forward.”

Mr. Russell thanked all of the committees, Legislature, staff, and department heads for their hard work with the budget.

Chairman of the Herkimer County Legislature, Vincent J. Bono added, “The County Legislature’s conservative budgeting over the years has allowed the County to make strategic investments in economic development projects which are paying off.”

Herkimer County Budget Officer Sheri Ferdula said, “The major negative drivers in the $112,182,839 budget were an additional $600,000 in foster care, $150,000 in our Indigent Defence program, and $2,25 million increase in the highway budget. Some of the positive aspects of this budget are a $1.4 million increase in sales tax, $400,000 in boarding of inmates at the new correctional facility, and $250,000 in In Rem land sales.”
